The phased array coils used in MRI Scanners usually operate as receive only coils. The in the MRI device implemented body coil act as the transmitter and sends the radio frequency energy to generate the excitation pulses. State-of-the-art array coil systems use 4 (up to 32) coils with separate receivers. This method is often referred to as a phased array coil system. The use of phased array MRI coils allows the decreasing of the number of signal averages, which shortens the scan time of a GE MRI scanner. High-sensitivity RF surface MRI coils and digital processing have been developed which will speed up image acquisition and reconstruction during the MRI scanning process. The sensitivity profile of an MRI phased array coil MRI element is measured by a low resolution 3D acquisition over the entire field of view whena patient gets an MRI scan. A phased array is an array of antennas in which the relative phases of the respective signals feeding the antennas are varied in such a way that the effective radiation pattern of the array is reinforced in a desired direction and suppressed in undesired directions. Another definition of a phased array is an arrangement of dipoles on a radar antenna, in which the phase of each dipole is controlled by a computer so that the beam can scan very rapidly.
